Recap On Emerald Ash Borer
Since we are getting more calls about Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), I thought it wold be a good idea to revisit some information about the pest. And what better source than the Nebraska Arborist Association!
-EAB has been confirmed in Omaha, NE. However, it has still not been confirmed within a 15 mile radius of Lincoln.
-EAB was first found in Detroit Michigan and been found in 27 states. since 2002.
-EAB is native to Asia and is about 1/2 inch long. It disrupts the trees nutrient and water flow, killing the tree.
-"EAB infested ash trees will exhibit thinning or dying branches in the top of the tree, S-shaped larval galleries under bark, D-shaped exit holes and suckers (along the trunk and main branches)".

Let's talk about wind damage!
Since we are having a particularly windy day, I thought it would be good to have some information on wind damge available to you!
"Trees and woody shrubs with broken branches need special attention. Remove damaged twigs and side shoots back to the main branch. You can shorten main branches to just above a side branch, but shortened branches will never grow any longer. If the remaining branch isn’t long enough to add graceful shape and character to the tree, it’s best to remove it. Cut the branch back to the collar, or the thickened area next to the trunk."

**We are not currently treating EAB as the Nebraska Extension office has not confirmed a case within a 15 mile radius of Lincoln. Treatments may start in spring 2017, possibly April or May.
